Two city dental experts have been invited to present their work at an international conference this month (March). Dr Robert Witton and Wendy Smith of Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise (PDSE) are heading to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA), a unique international organisation of oral health professionals dedicated to promoting oral health and well being for people with special needs.
The duo will showcase PDSE’s analysis of the oral health care needs and oral health-related quality of life in vulnerable adults in Plymouth, leading a round table presentation about the topic and a poster presentation. Specialist trainee in dental public health Reena Patel also contributed to the dental poster.
The annual three-day meeting is the ‘go-to’ event for dentists, hygienists and others who participate in providing oral health care for patients with special needs.
Oral, poster and roundtable education sessions are presented by subject-matter experts in the special care field. Attendees gain exposure to new ideas and emerging research that is propelling the industry forward.
PDSE Director Robert Witton says: “We’re delighted to have been asked to present our work to oral health professionals from all over the world and proud that PDSE is recognised as an expert provider in its field.
“Our study highlights the complex oral health needs and psycho-social factors that need to be taken into account when planning oral care services for vulnerable adults. “It is intended that the results of this basic survey will help locally to raise awareness of such issues, and inform the planning and implementing of appropriate dental services, alongside oral health improvement strategies targeted at these adults.”
It is not the first time the PDSE pair have been invited to speak in the US. Last year they presented their dental ambassadors project, the first of its kind in the UK, at the International Association of Disability and Oral Health Congress in Chicago, Illinois.
