The impact of digital dentistry at PDSE has been recognised in a newly published article in BDJ Open, highlighting the successful introduction of digital workflows into both dental education and patient care.
The publication follows the introduction of intraoral scanning technology across PDSE’s facilities, enabling students and clinicians to incorporate digital techniques into practice. The article explores how digital dentistry has enhanced learning opportunities, improved clinical workflows and helped prepare future dental professionals for the increasingly digital landscape of modern dentistry.
The integration of digital scanning technology has enabled students to gain hands-on experience using equipment increasingly used in modern dental practices. Alongside supporting education, the technology also offers benefits for patients, including improved comfort, streamlined clinical processes and enhanced communication during treatment planning.
Since the initial implementation, PDSE has continued to expand its digital dentistry capabilities. Additional intraoral scanners have recently been introduced across our sites and a new 3D printer has been procured, creating further opportunities for advanced treatment planning, restorative workflows and enhanced teaching experiences. The expanded digital fleet also enables PDSE’s qualified clinicians to integrate digital workflows into their own practice, supporting innovation in patient care while ensuring students are exposed to the technologies and approaches increasingly used across modern dentistry.

Andrew Sleigh, Director of Clinical Dentistry at PDSE, commented:
“The introduction of digital dentistry represents an important step forward for both our students and our patients. By embedding these technologies into undergraduate training and clinical practice, we are ensuring our future dental professionals are equipped with the skills expected in modern dentistry. At the same time, digital workflows improve accuracy, efficiency, and the overall patient experience. This investment reflects PDSE’s commitment to delivering high-quality care while continuing to innovate in education, research, and clinical service delivery.”
PDSE is committed to advancing education, research and clinical service delivery through innovation. The publication of this research demonstrates the value of integrating digital technologies into both dental education and clinical practice. By sharing the experiences of students and staff, the article contributes to the evidence base supporting the adoption of digital dentistry and highlights the impact of these approaches within a social enterprise dental setting.
