This month, we mark the retirement of our highly respected Clinical Lead at Derriford DEF, Bill Beare, whose contribution to University of Plymouth’s Peninsula Dental School and Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise (PDSE), and dental education spans more than a decade – and a distinguished career far beyond.

Joining PDSE in 2011 as a Daybook Facilitator, Bill quickly transitioned into a part-time Clinical Lead role at the Derriford Dental Education Facility, where his passion for teaching and mentoring students found its natural home. In 2017, he became the appointed Clinical Lead at Derriford, playing a pivotal role in shaping the student experience and clinical training environment.
His influence has been instrumental in fostering a more supportive and constructive atmosphere for final-year students – transforming what was once a high-pressure environment into one that emphasises guidance, encouragement, and professional development. This lasting contribution has helped establish a model of undergraduate dental training that is widely regarded as exemplary.
Prior to joining PDSE, he enjoyed a remarkable career that combined clinical excellence, education, and military service. After qualifying in dentistry from Guy’s Hospital in 1974, he began his career in academia before moving into general practice. He later joined the Army, where he served with distinction, including deployment during the Gulf War, and went on to become the Army’s first Consultant in Restorative Dentistry.
Throughout his military career, he led the development of restorative dental services across the UK and overseas, established specialist clinics, and contributed significantly to postgraduate dental education. His work supported both complex patient care and the advancement of dental professionals, leaving a lasting legacy within military dentistry.
Following his military retirement in 2009, he returned to the South West, continuing to contribute to postgraduate training while running a referral practice across the region. His eventual involvement with PDSE brought his extensive experience full circle – combining his passion for teaching, clinical expertise, and commitment to supporting the next generation of dentists.
Reflecting on his time at PDSE, he describes it as the most rewarding role of his career. He takes great pride in the collaborative and supportive culture of the Dental School and the strength of the team he has worked alongside. Bill commented: “I have worked with a fabulous team of supervisors, nurses, academic staff, administrators and students and I firmly believe we have the best model for undergraduate training in the UK.”
As he retires from Peninsula Dental School, he leaves behind a lasting impact on PDSE, its students, and colleagues. We are deeply grateful for his dedication, leadership, and many years of service.
Rob Witton, Chief Executive Officer at PDSE, commented: “Bill has made an exceptional contribution to PDSE and the Dental School over many years. His leadership, experience, and commitment to student development have helped shape the supportive and high-quality learning environment we are proud of today. We are extremely grateful for his dedication and service.”
We wish him a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.
